Mu News – January 2020

January Newsletter:

Formal:

From the Classic City to the Big Easy, Mu Chapter made the trip to the exciting city of New Orleans during the long weekend of Martin Luther King Day.  For this year’s formal event, Mu brothers and their dates began the bus ride Friday morning and arrived early in the evening for a night on Bourbon Street. The trip was highlighted with sightseeing, experiencing the local flavors, and an unforgettable formal event Saturday night at Mardi Gras World. Located upon the Mississippi River, Mardi Gras World is home to many of the parade floats used during the weekend of Mardi Gras. The event included a memorable performance by The Revelries, a band consisting of fellow Sigma Nu brothers from the Phi Chapter at LSU.   The highlight of the night was the brotherhood awards ceremony, including the award for Brother of the Year awarded to Bennett Porson (M 2731). On Sunday, Mu brothers and dates took to Fair Grounds Race Course for an exciting afternoon of horse racing. After a fun and tiring weekend, they boarded the bus and returned to Athens to get back to their studies.  Many thanks to former Treasurer Antonio Imbornone (M 2671) and Treasurer Sean Lynch (M 2754) for all their efforts organizing this experience.

Alumni Advisory Board Meeting:

In early January, Mu Chapter’s Executive Council (EC) traveled to Atlanta to meet with Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) members Joel Stern (M 2297), Buck Dixon (M 2326), and Nathan Whitmire (M 2318). This type of meeting occurs once per semester and provides the new EC an opportunity to present their goals and objectives for the coming months.   Meant to simulate a real-world board meeting, each student leader gives their individual report and receives feedback from the alumni team.  A tradition over 10 years running, the AAB meeting ensures that the active and alumni leadership teams are in lockstep and puts Mu Chapter in the position to continue operating at a level of excellence.

Rush for Fall 2020:

Our rush efforts for the Fall 2020 class are under way in Athens.  If you know of a young man that would make a good Mu brother, please contact our Recruitment Chair, Shelby Edwards (M 2742), at muchapterrecruitmentchair@gmail.com.  Rush events will begin this March and continue throughout the summer.

Commander’s Dinner:

On January 9th, nearly 50 alumni and brothers gathered for the 14th annual Commander’s Dinner at Bone’s in Atlanta.  This special annual gathering provides the opportunity for all former Mu Chapter Commanders and special guests to meet the newly elected Commander, Bennett Porson (M 2731), and to provide their guidance for his term serving the Chapter.  Bennett gave a “State of the Chapter” speech, alumnus Ronnie Waller (M 1141) updated the crowd on the “Greatest Generation” reunion plans for this summer, and as always, the most memorable part of the night was the round of advice given to the new leader by the generations of former chapter leaders in attendance.  Many thanks to the alumni and guests that traveled long distances to attend, including those from Charlotte, Birmingham, and South Georgia.
