Mu News – February 2020

February Newsletter:

Greetings from Mu Chapter in the Classic City! We hope that everyone is doing well during this time of chaos. The University of Georgia has suspended all classes on campus through the entirety of the spring semester and will continue courses online for the remainder of the semester. We will continue chapter functions and plan to update alumnus, families, and brothers on any further plans. Thank you for your patience during this time and we look to continue to inform you about the chapter!

A Snow Day in Athens:

The boys of Mu Chapter were woken up to a surprise falling from the skies as a blanket of snow coated Athens on the morning of February 8th. Many brothers soon headed to the house to participate in a giant snowball fight and for some sledding down the hill right next to Le Chateau. For many, this was the first time they had seen snow in Georgia in years, if not ever. The snowfall was a very interesting surprise considering earlier in the week, many brothers were shooting some baskets out front of the house or participating in intramural games outdoors.

Mardi Gras:

On the opening weekend of Mardi Gras, several members of the Mu Chapter made the journey from Athens to New Orleans. A majority of brothers left Friday and arrived in New Orleans in time to go to the St. Charles Street Parade. Lots of beads were caught from the incredibly intricate floats as they slowly drove by the crowds. On Saturday the festivities continued starting with a day another parade at St. Charles Street and ending with a parade at Canal Street. Some brothers returned to Bourbon Street and visited the bars and shops they enjoyed at formal. Sunday people grabbed some lunch and hit the road to get back to Athens in time to make it to class on Monday. All in all it was a great trip with amazing food and even better brothers.

Phi Mu Wedding Social:

On February 13, Mu Chapter hosted the first annual wedding social with Phi Mu. Brothers decorated the basement in white making an aisle for the bride leading to center stage. Brothers dressed in tacky wedding attire. Commander Bennett Porson “married” Phi Mu’s president to conclude the event. From the house, brothers and phi mu met downtown to continue the wedding celebration. The first wedding social was a big hit, and Mu looks forward to continuing this tradition in the future.

The Beginning of Baseball Season:

The Dawgs returned to Foley Field for the 2020 season and started off on a high note. Opening weekend saw the Dawgs host The Richmond Spiders and a clean sweep February 14-16. Georgia continued on a hot streak through their meeting with Santa Clara losing 1 game of the 4 game series on Sunday February 23. Closing out the month with dominant wins over in-state rivals Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech the Dawgs 11-1 over all and will see their first SEC opponents March 13 at Florida. Brothers gathered on Kudzu hill to watch home games and have cheered ferociously for the Dawgs and made visiting right fielders welcome. Georgia remains at number 4 in the country going into March and everyone is excited for the many games to come.

Looking Towards Rush:

Starting in May, Mu Chapter will begin the rush process with the annual Rafting Trip down the Oconee River hosted by Big Dawgs On the River. This trip continues to be the highlight of the summer for active Brothers to join one another in kicking off rush. The event will be held on May 30th and will include a cookout following the float down the river. The rush team looks to add members to Mu Chapter that will carry the standard of excellence that each Brother seeks to uphold. Please contact Shelby Edwards (M 2742) at muchapterrecruitmentchair@gmail.com with any questions or additions to the rush list.
