January 2019 Alumni Update

Dear Mu Alumni,

In correlation with Sigma Nu’s 150th anniversary and John Hearn’s message of “Return to the Rock,” the 2019 Mu Chapter leadership wants to bring the current chapter closer to alumni. We feel it is critical to our success to keep Mu alumni in the loop on what is going on within the chapter and provide outlets for actives and alumni to build stronger relations than ever before.

Monthly, my team and I will put together storylines of what has occurred in the chapter during the month and what is to come in the future. These quick summaries will be uploaded to Facebook and our website in attempt to keep all of our Sigma Nu alumni in tune with what is going on with the chapter. So, if you have a brother from your pledge class that isn’t on this page please invite them to help us get the news out for everyone to hear.

As we continue to improve our communication for the future I would like to provide my contact information so if you have any questions on what is going on in the chapter I am happy to answer anything! My email is mualumnichair@gmail.com.

The active chapter thanks you for your continued support for all that we do. As we progress through this year, we look forward to solidifying the brotherhood between the active chapter and our alumni.

Fraternally,

Bennett Porson

Alumni Chair

College of Chapters

As a part of the annual tradition, Commander Bing Bishop (M2713)  traveled to Roanoke, Virginia, to attend the College of Chapters to represent Mu Chapter. Bing participated in sessions ranging from visionary leadership to roster and budgeting strategies. Bing had the opportunity to meet with other Sigma Nu Commanders from across the country, and was able to speak specifically with other southeastern Sigma Nu Commanders from the likes of Auburn, Ole Miss, and Alabama to name a few. Several Mu alumni participated as volunteers, including John Hearn (M2000), Michael Barry (M2071), Robert Durham (M1650), Joel Stern (M2297), and Wells Ellenberg (M2400).

John Hearn visits Mu Chapter to Begin the 2019 School Year:

On January 21, Sigma Nu Regent and Mu Alumni John Hearn (M2000) visited River Road to touch on a number of topics which included goal setting for campus involvement and alumni networking opportunities. John Hearn broke the chapter up into groups with an aim of having each group come up with ten words that describe a successful attribute of campus involvement and reputation. The active chapter greatly benefited from this effective presentation and helped put the 2019 school year in perspective, as we strive to improve as a chapter.  Thank you Regent Hearn!

Mu Travels to New Orleans for 2019 White Rose Formal

Over MLK weekend, Mu Chapter celebrated the 2019 White Rose Formal in New Orleans, Louisiana and the weekend did not disappoint. After changing locations from Charleston, South Carolina, exploring Bourbon street was a first for many and an old hat for few. Formal was held at Bourbon Heat on Saturday night and was a hit by all of the brothers and their dates. The band, The Revelries, composed of brothers from LSU’s Sigma Nu chapter, played at the event and gave a performance everyone enjoyed immensely. All brothers and their dates enjoyed the weekend and had a spectacular time exploring the city. We are excited at the possibility of returning next year. Pictures from this year’s formal can be found attached to this post.

The Commanders Dinner:

This past month the former Commanders gathered in Atlanta to welcome the newly elected Commander, Bing Bishop. During the dinner, each former Commander shared stories with one another and shared their advice for Bing. Alumni Tom Johnson (M1232) shared a special presentation of his life lessons, an outline which he hopes to turn into a memoir.  In addition to Mu alumni, we had special guests from Auburn, Georgia Southern, and a member of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation board. Sticking with tradition, Bing addressed the crowd with a “State of the Chapter” address and received the first standing ovation in Commanders’ Dinner history. This event continues to be an honored Sigma Nu tradition and creates connections with former chapter leaders while allowing the new Commander to receive advice that cannot be obtained anywhere else.
