Mu News – September 2021

Jam for Cam:

On Friday September 17th, the most important event that Mu Chapter has become a part of returned after missing last year due to COVID-19. The annual Jam for Cam philanthropy event is organized in memory of brother Cameron Fearon (Mu 2719), who passed away at the age of 19 due to metastatic melanoma. Beginning in the fall of 2018, the charity concert festival has grown both in size and fundraising ability. This year Mu chapter raised over $177,000 to be donated to the Melanoma Research Foundation, Camp Carolina (Cameron’s childhood camp), the Preston Robert Tisch Foundation, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Brothers raised money through external donations, ticket sales, and sponsorships. On the day of the event, over 5,000 people gathered at Southern Brewing Company in Athens, GA to enjoy live music performed by six different bands, with American Funk band The Main Squeeze headlining the nights performers, and celebrate the memory of a brother and friend who truly changed the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. Jam for Cam has quickly become known as the largest Greek philanthropy event in the history of the University and one of the largest in the country. We are so proud of this event and are happy Cameron is remembered in such a remarkable fashion. Below are links to articles posted in the UGA Red & Black Newspaper about the event and the link to the official Jam for Cam website for more information about the event and the organizations that it supports.

On Friday the 5th, we invite parents and brothers to gather at The Foundry for a welcome to Athens event. This will be followed by the Alumni and Parents Weekend Tailgate on Saturday before the Dawgs kickoff against Missouri. Additionally, the second annual Classic City Open golf tournament will take place on Sunday the 7th at The Chimneys Golf Club. Parent and Alumni participation in the tournament is both welcomed and encouraged, and more details regarding sign-ups will be released shortly. UGA vs. Clemson in Charlotte:

September 4, 2021 has been a day circled on all of our calendars since it was announced that UGA would be opening up the 2021 season in Charlotte against those ugly Clemson Tigers. The Dawgs knew that they had to travel to the beautiful city of Charlotte, NC and pack out the stadium. Luckily for some of us, Sigma Nu alumni Luther Lockwood (Mu 1901) and current member Thomas Lockwood (Mu 2801) kindly opened up their home for many brothers to stay and enjoy the game day festivities. Along with the help of many other parents, the Lockwoods hosted a game day tailgate where brothers, alumni, and parents were there in participation. As you can imagine, this got everyone fired up for the game where The Dawgs would go on to win 10-3 over Clemson. I think I speak for the entire fraternity when I say that Charlotte was a weekend to remember, and we will definitely be back. Thanks again to Mr. Lockwood and all of the other gracious hosts in Charlotte, Go Dawgs!

Home Games are Back!

On Saturday September 11th, the Dawgs had their first home football game following an incredible win against Clemson in Charlotte. Not only was it our first home game back to full capacity, but it was our first full tailgate we were allowed to have at the house in over a year. This was a very exciting day for all involved, as it felt great to have game day festivities in Athens back to normal. The tailgate was a very good start to home day festivities as we had two local bands play at the Chateau. As the parking spots began to get filled by the alumni, Spin Cycle played before the game to get everyone in their right minds to be a Damn Good Dawg between the hedges. After the Dawgs first home victory of the season the Stews played to celebrate yet another win in the Classic City. Getting back into the swing of full capacity gave the chapter a breath of fresh air. Ensuring that we are heading back to normal operations known in the pre-pandemic days.

On Saturday September 18th, the South Carolina Gamecocks visited the Georgia Bulldogs for the first night game following the Covid Pandemic. The men of Sigma Nu planned accordingly, about like the Dawgs did, to crush the Gamecocks between the hedges. The tailgate began early, and the brothers and sorority company came together to prepare for the game with a great band, the Bloody Mary Situation. The band members were a group of Sigma Nus from Suwanee, who came to feed the excitement by playing an incredible set before the game. As game time approached, the brothers gathered and marched early to grab their blocked seats before the start of the game. The game was about as expected, as many lost their voices cheering on the Dawgs as we demolished the Gamecocks. The younger members were able to experience the red lights for the first time as a student as the upperclassmen saw them once again. As encouraged, most stayed until the very end of the game. It was great to get our revenge against South Carolina in Sanford, for their upset two years ago between the hedges left a sour taste in many brothers’ mouths until our recent redemption.

Skate Night Date Night:

The brothers of Mu chapter were excited to start our first date night of the year with a skating date night. The Date night was on September 30th at Fun Galaxy in Athens. As people arrived at the venue with disco themed costumes, the skating rink was transformed back in time to the 80s. At the skating rink, everyone had a lot of fun skating around the venue, participating in organized games and races, and passing the time with their dates.  The new members definitely made the most of the night, taking advantage of their first date night with Mu Chapter. As for the brothers, it was fun to see them take a break and have some fun on a date night with the rest of the Chapter. Despite a few minor bruises, the skating date night was a great success and a great way to kick the year off!
