Mu News – January 2022

Formal in New Orleans

On the weekend of January 14th, the brothers of Mu chapter, accompanied by their dates, took the National Championship celebration down to New Orleans, Louisiana for our annual White Rose Formal. We arrived Friday afternoon, and Brothers spent the night exploring the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. On Saturday, brothers were given the chance to spend the day however they wanted. Many took the time to sight-see some of the historic landmarks (Jackson Square, the WWII museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, etc.), eat some traditional Louisiana Cajun cuisine (such as beignets from the famous Café Du Monde, gumbo, and seafood), and walk through some of the best shops and gift stores throughout New Orleans. On Saturday night, the brothers and their dates went to The House of Blues for our White Rose Formal, where we danced to the incredible band, Gravy, gave out the formal awards, and enjoyed the night. A special congratulations to Brother Jack Donovan, Mu 2741, on winning Brother of Year. Sunday morning, the news broke that due to snow in Athens and unsafe driving conditions, we were staying in New Orleans for one more night. Excited about the news, we headed to our previously planned River Boat tour, where we were served a New Orleans style brunch and given an amazing tour of the city from the water. Since we had the remainder of the day unplanned, we were given the opportunity to spend the day however we wanted. This gave brothers the opportunity to see anything they may have missed throughout the weekend and explore downtown Bourbon Street for one more night. The long bus ride home on Monday was filled with brothers exchanging laughs and stories of each other’s weekend. It’s safe to say we left New Orleans with plenty of beads, souvenirs, and memories to last a lifetime.

Late night date night

On Saturday, January 29th, the brothers of Mu chapter hosted a “late-night” date night. The night started at 11:30 at the house after the brothers and their dates came back from downtown.  The chapter catered hundreds of Cane’s chicken tenders and we hosted Jameson Tank, a local band, starting at 12:00 o’clock. Good times were had by all and the band played until the wee hours of the morning. Every man and woman in sight was dancing until the band finally retired at 1:30. All in all, the late-night date night was a massive success, and it will undoubtedly become a yearly tradition.

Dawgs Travel to Indy

Indianapolis was filled with Dawgs chasing their first National Championship since 1980. Despite the brutally cold weather, the Dawgs still traveled. Everybody was calling the Dawgs, whether it was in a hotel, steak house, or bar. Once the trophy ceremony started after the game, about 75 percent of the stadium was still full. It was truly a special moment. Active brother Graham Collins (Mu 2838), had the opportunity to be a part of the team this year. He played outside linebacker and wore the number 42. I had the opportunity to ask him a quick couple of questions.  When asked about his most memorable moment during the game, he responded: “Watching all the confetti come down and wearing the championship gear after 41 years of not winning a championship.” He also was able to have a great time in Indianapolis and this was his favorite moment, “Seeing my family after the game, because they know all the hard work I put in to get to this situation.”

What a season!  We are proud of all the work Graham and the rest of the team put in to get to this moment and win the game.  Go Dawgs!

Championship Fever in Athens

After 41 long years, The Dawgs finally brought the national championship trophy back home to where it belongs.  After the Braves won back in November, it is officially Georgia’s year. As the game clock struck zero with the score 33-18, everyone in Athens gathered together on Clayton street to enjoy a night we had dreamt of for so long. Between the non stop ringing of the chapel bell, honking of car horns, and climbing of telephone poles, it was an unforgettable celebration and a victory that will live with us forever. It gives us an appreciation for why Tom Brady is only now considering retirement in year 300 of his career. As the weeks have passed the bookstore has been selling shirts almost before they even reach the shelves and there is a buzz on campus that our generation has never experienced in February before. It feels good to be back on top, Go Dawgs!

Active member spotlight: Sam Hobbs

Over the first semester freshman Sam Hobbs (Mu 2882), son of alumni Jeffrey Hobbs (Mu 1944), has been putting in hard work on the ultimate frisbee team club team for UGA: Jojah. Hobbs, the only freshman on the team, led the team to their most successful season ever, going 24-3 and making it to the championship game. The playoff bracket was played in Norco, California over Christmas Break, where they played 10 games. The competitive final four bracket included Texas, Michigan, and UNC as well. Jojah made it to the championship game as an 11th ranked underdog against UNC. Although falling just short of National Champions, Hobbs recorded one goal and one assist in the championship game which was televised on ESPNU. Hobbs said he was proud to have this success as a freshman on the team and he hopes he can lead them to a National Title during his college career.
