Mu News – End of Year

Phi Mu Wedding:

The annual Sigma Nu and Phi Mu “wedding” held on April 1st was one for the books. Due to COVID the event was held at The Warehouse in downtown Athens where the two chapters and their members piled in dressed in the tackiest dresses and suits available. The holy matrimony between the Phi Mu president Diane and our very own Commander Trey Williams (Mu 2802) went without a problem despite the fact both of them have significant others. Recorder James Bruno (Mu 2776) officiated the wedding and saw the two star crossed lovers join together in front of a crowd of happy wedding crashers who wanted nothing more than the marriage to be official. Vows were said, a kiss was made, and Trey and Diane’s significant others were significantly upset. Tradition is something you cannot break and just as Trey and Diane’s love will live on, so will the annual Sigma Nu and Phi Mu tacky wedding.

Crawfish Boil:

On April 10th, the brothers, along with the help of JP Boyd (M2715), his grandfather Charles Christmas and buddies Damon Ellzey and Stuart Murphy, had a crawfish boil at The Chateau. JP’s grandfather drove up from Amite, Louisiana, to boil around 300 pounds of crawfish, sausage, corn, potatoes, and pineapples for the brothers. Since COVID has been keeping all of the brothers from getting together and having events like this, it was nice to finally get together and enjoy a massive meal of crawfish cooked cajun style. Believe it or not, it was several brothers’ first time ever having crawfish, and it was incredible for JP to share a long standing family tradition with the chapter. Once again, a huge thank you to JP and his grandfather for bringing and cooking so much delicious food for the fraternity!

Graham Collins UGA Football #42:

Graham Collins (M2838), a sophomore and Mu Chapter legacy, tried out for the UGA football team this past February and made it on the team as a walk-on. Graham has been participating in morning workouts, practice, and film on a daily basis at the practice facility throughout this semester. Initially, Graham was listed as a wide receiver, while the coaches have moved him to inside linebacker after further consideration. Graham had the opportunity to play in the G-Day spring game, where he was able to showcase his abilities and recorded a sack in the game! Graham reflected on his time being a part of the program: “The past couple months have really been a dream come to reality for me. It makes me think about middle school and how I used to dream of playing for the Georgia Bulldogs. It has been a big step up to play Division 1 football coming from a small school in Atlanta, but I am actively working on my skills every day to make myself a better player. It has been an incredible experience so far and I can’t wait to continue on this new journey.” Congratulations Graham, keep up the great work, and as always Go Dawgs!

Parents Weekend:

On the morning of April 17th, Mu brothers and their parents gathered at Big Dogs On the River for a successful Parents Weekend brunch before the G-Day game.  The event allowed for the brothers and their families to meet each other and converse about what a year it has been. The event included a big breakfast spread, beverages, and a great live band to set the tone for the beautiful sunny day. Attendance was very strong as many families were eager to get to Athens and experience their first Mu Chapter event in many months.  This year’s Parents Weekend was a great success and we are excited for the next Parents Weekend this fall as it will be combined with the Alumni Tailgate when the Dawgs face off against Missouri on November 6th.

Classic City Open:

To cap off a successful Parents Weekend and G-Day, brothers, alumni and parents hit the links in the first annual Classic City Open. Twenty-two teams scrambled at Lane Creek Golf Club in Athens with the hope of winning a Nick Chubb signed football or gift card to South Kitchen & Bar.  Thanks to the tremendous support from parents and alumni, the chapter raised $4,500 for the Piedmont Athens Loren Smith Cancer Center!

At the end of the tournament, 18 holes was not enough to determine the winner as a playoff hole saw Brother Carter Albritton (Mu 2769) drain the winning par putt after a team of four seniors failed to capitalize on a nearly 320 yard drive. Congratulations to Joel Stern (M2297), Nick Hendricks (M2298), Austin Hackney (M2323), and Carter Albritton on an incredible overtime victory! The adaptation of the traditional Classic City Bowl to the Classic City Open may have started the newest Mu Chapter tradition, as the brothers are eager to establish it as an annual event after its immediate success.

Woodstock:

After a long spring semester, Mu Chapter was finally able to have their annual spring party, Woodstock. The party took place over two days, with the first event on April 20th at The Warehouse in downtown Athens and the second on April 24th at Pappy’s Field. At The Warehouse, the chapter hosted two bands including their very own Sassafras Roots, who opened up for the Vegabonds and then were followed by a DJ. On Saturday at Pappy’s Field, they hosted two bands, Grandville and CBDB. CBDB has become a Mu Chapter favorite as they have also played at past Jam for Cams. Woodstock was a very entertaining 2 days of peace, love, and music, and the chapter is looking forward to having Woodstock return back to The Chateau next spring.
