Mu News – April 2022

150th ANNIVERSARY MARK YOUR CALENDARS

To celebrate Mu chapter’s 150th Anniversary the current Executive Council and a special committee are planning a party with the hopes of bringing everyone back to Athens. Please go ahead and add the event to your calendars. Saturday January 21, 2023 will be a black tie event at the Classic Center in Athens from 6-10pm. There will be dinner, a short presentation and a band. The day will also include an open house on River Rd during the afternoon as well as gatherings for groups of pledge classes following dinner. All alumni are invited and we are really excited to share more information about event registration and details as we continue planning it. Go Dawgs!

Thank You Alumni Advisory Board

On behalf of Mu Chapter, we would like to say thank you to Joel Stern, Nathan Whitmire and the rest of the Alumni Advisory Board for successfully leading our chapter over the past several years.  Joel has served as our chapter advisor and house corp. president for the past 7 years, along with being on the AAB for the past 13 years.  Under his leadership we have won 4 Rock Chapters in a row and won many other awards such as the NAIC Merit of Distinction Award, UGA IFC Chapter of the Year, UGA IFC Best Philanthropy, UGA IFC Alumni Involvement, and IFC Health and Well-being Awards.  The chapter has also had a strong pattern of philanthropy under their leadership.  Jam for Cam is one of the largest greek life philanthropy events in the country and it raised over $177,000 and had over 5,000 people in attendance.  We have also annually hosted the Classic City Bowl every year since 2015.  Currently, about 40% of Mu Chapter members hold leadership positions within the UGA community and Joel has seen over 270 men initiated during his time as chapter advisor.  We have had representation on the IFC Executive council for the past 15 straight years, along with 2 terms of IFC president.  Under the AAB’s leadership we successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic as being one of 5 chapters on UGA’s campus with zero fines or violations of the UGA and IFC COVID guidelines.  They also helped facilitate Mu Chapter’s first Mental Health Committee within the chapter to support brothers and to create a model that has been adopted by other chapters on campus and Sigma Nu nationally.  Thank you Joel, Nathan, and the rest of the AAB for your tireless hard work and everything you have done to help support this community.

Classic City Bowl

On April 24th, the brothers of Mu chapter and the brothers of Sigma Chi hosted a charity football game at Clarke Central High School to raise money for Jam for Cam and the Sam Asbury Foundation. People could enter a raffle for the chance to win a football signed by former UGA quarterback Aaron Murray.  Although the brothers of Sigma Nu played hard, the team lost in overtime 10-7 by a field goal to Sigma Chi. Despite this loss, the Classic City Bowl was still a win, with $5000 raised to benefit cancer research and suicide prevention. After the game, the brothers of Sigma Nu hosted a crawfish boil to celebrate the day’s successful fundraising. Despite the loss on the field, the day was a big success for Mu chapter philanthropy.

Semi Date night

On Thursday, April 21, the men of Mu Chapter and their dates drew the semester to a close with Semi-Formal.  The event was hosted at Boar’s Head Lounge, where brothers gathered to enjoy The Ocho band. The event was a hit, as many brothers sang along to classic songs performed by the band.  This was a great night of brotherhood and fun, and it was a perfect way to bring the social calendar of the year to an end.

Parents Weekend

To draw April to an end, the Brothers of Mu Chapter hosted our semi-annual Parents Weekend. With Twilight this weekend, a semiannual series of bike races and a festival atmosphere in downtown Athens, our parents got to experience an awesome weekend in The Classic City while spending time meeting the brothers as well as their parents. On Saturday morning, parents gathered at the house for brunch, before going downtown to watch the Twilight Festival unfold. To end the night, we all gathered at “The Venue” on broad, where we conversed and watched some live Athens music. It’s always a great weekend hosting our parents and it was a great way to send the brothers into the final weeks of the semester.

Greek Day of service

On Earth Day April 21st, hundreds of UGA Greek life members worked to improve our community by volunteering to participate in the Greek Life day of service.  Trey Williams, Mu member and Vice President of Philanthropy and Service, organized the event and ensured that it all went smoothly.  Some volunteers cleaned up a road in Athens, other volunteers went to a cemetery to help restore some of the grave sites and restore the property.  Overall, the event went really well and it was great to give back to the community.
