Mu News – February 2021

Alumni Spotlight:

Attention Brothers of Mother Mu, we are starting an Alumni spotlight program in which each newsletter there will be a special alumnus highlighted and interviewed. If you want to see yourself, a pledge brother, or another alumnus of Mu Chapter in the Spotlight, please email their name and any contact information you have to Mualumnichair@gmail.com. We are excited to kickstart this program and look forward to receiving your nominations!

UGA Miracle President’s Day Fundraiser:

UGA Miracle is an on-campus organization that raises money for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital. They utilize a variety of events throughout the year to raise money for Children’s Healthcare including their signature Dance Marathon event at the end of February every year. This year UGA Miracle also did a Presidents’ Day Fundraiser in partnership with the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils. The president of each fraternity and sorority raised money all day on Presidents’ Day to kickstart the Dance Marathon event. Mu Chapter Commander Trey Williams, Mu 2802, set a goal of raising $500 for the day and ended up raising $537! Trey did a fantastic job in the first year that Sigma Nu participated in the Presidents’ Day Fundraiser, and we look forward to continuing our participation in the future.

Bowling Date Night:

On Wednesday February 10th, the Sigma Nu men and their dates gathered at Showtime Bowl for an evening of bowling, music, and fun. We went along with the 80’s theme, full of neon colors and fixed hair by the dates. Everyone went all in, and enjoyed bowling a few competitive games and eating an assortment of better-than-expected food. To comply with Covid-19 protocols, Mu Chapter rented out the whole bowling alley to ourselves to give us plenty of room to socially distance. The event also consisted of time blocks with sophomores and seniors in the first hour and a half followed by the freshman and juniors in the second. The separation allowed for workers to feel more comfortable about the number of people while also ensuring everyone received and opportunity to bowl. Showtime Bowl was also a short distance, within Athens, compared to previously visited bowling alleys which allowed for easy transportation to and from the bowling alley. The night proved successful with no major incidents and a hopeful feeling of returning for another fun night.

ESP Banner Contest:

Extra Special People (ESP) is a local Athens charity that started in 1986 with the goal of “creating transformative experiences for people with disabilities and their families, changing communities for the better.” For many years Sigma Nu has been a helping hand towards this organizational goal. 2021 has been no different; during the month of February, ESP started a banner contest. The rules were simple, make a banner promoting ESP’s biggest fundraiser, Big Hearts, and the winner of the contest is the banner that receives the most likes and shares on ESP’s Facebook page. Senior brother Sean Lynch, Mu 2754, saw this contest as a chance for members of the fraternity to gather together to promote an organization he has helped for years. Through Sean’s organization the freshman pledge class of Fall 2020 joined one evening and created the banner that would go on to win the entire contest. Simple yet effective, Sigma Nu’s banner was placed on the back of the house visible to anyone traveling on River Road. While ESP treating the fraternity to free coffee was a welcome gift, Mu Chapter members were more than happy to be able to join with an organization that never fails to make a difference in the Athens community we call home.

Griffin Boykin Earns Orientation Leader Position:

Mu Chapter’s very own Griffin Boykin, Mu 2848, has the distinct honor of being an Orientation Leader for the UGA class of 2025. He wanted to become an orientation leader to get more involved on campus and help lead the new team of Georgia Bulldogs. Coming from , Georgia, he did not have a good understanding of all that UGA has to offer, until he came to orientation. Having the opportunity to impact freshmen and their journey is one of the main reasons Griffin wanted to become an orientation leader. He will spend his summer leading over 30 small groups of students and spending time introducing them to all of the organizations that UGA has to offer. He’s very excited to represent his university and this chapter this summer. Congratulations Griffin, we know you will be a great leader!
