Mu News – April 2019

Dear Alumni,

As we wrap up the 2019 spring semester this will be the last email newsletter until August. However, we will stay active on the Mu Facebook page with updates on what brothers are doing throughout the summer. If you are not yet added to the Facebook page, but would like to stay in the loop, please do not hesitate to email me at mualumnichair@gmail.com and I will be happy to direct you on how to be added.

We had a great closing month of the spring semester and we hope you enjoy the April updates!

Spring and summer rush is well underway for our Fall 2019 candidate class. If you know of a high quality young man enrolling at UGA that would make a strong Mu brother, please send his name and information to our Recruitment Chair, Cole Smith, at muchapterrecruitmentchair@gmail.com

Another successful year for the Classic City Bowl as the active chapter held the 5th annual philanthropy football game against Sigma Chi. The full contact football game sold out of tickets while grossing over $13,000 dollars in donations, $8,000 of that was donated to the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The active chapter felt moved by the mission of the Bob Woodruff Foundation and hope the money raised through the Classic City Bowl helps to making a lasting impact on the lives of veterans. Despite losing 14-0, the brothers are proud of their work supporting such a great cause and continuing the unique Classic City Bowl tradition in Athens. Thank you to all of the alumni who supported the Classic City Bowl through their donations and attendance.

The national Sigma Nu chapter traveled to Atlanta to hold their final of twelve events celebrating Sigma Nu’s 150th anniversary. The Atlanta event was held at the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead and boasted over 400 Sigma Nu actives and alumni in attendance. While there alumni from Sigma Nu chapters all across the country, Mu alumni were well attended as brothers traveled from across the state to celebrate the anniversary. Sigma Nu Regent John Hearn (M 2000)  gave a state of the union style address in which Regent Hearn touched on the positive state of the fraternity while also addressing the current threats to Sigma Nu.

The weekend of the 6th the active Mu chapter made the journey to Hilton Head Island to partake in this year’s beach weekend. While the weather wasn’t the greatest, the brothers made the most of their time on the beach while checking out all Hilton Head has to offer. Pictured below are members of the fall of 2018 pledge class enjoying a late night on the beach.

Monday night Mu chapter held the Affirmation of Knighthood ceremony for five seniors moving from the active chapter to the alumni chapter. Jan Berland (M 2654) , Cole McVay (M 2645), Nick Barlow (M 2662), Connor Meitin (M 2679) and Kerrigan Arnold (M 2691) were honored in the ceremony. Huge thank you to Joel Stern (M 2297) for making the trip to Athens and helping out with the ceremony. Good luck to the five brothers pictured below as they move onto their new jobs and business schools.

Mu chapter has the incredible opportunity to serve the community on a weekly basis at Extra Special People in Watkinsville. Every Thursday, 2-3 active Mu brothers go to ESP to be apart of the organization’s “snack squad”. That entails bringing snacks and serving them to the children of Extra Special People. ESP is an organization that fosters the development of children and young people with special needs while giving them a community in which they can prosper. Mu chapter has loved working with ESP over the past couple years and looks forward to our continued relationship.

The active brothers welcomed their parents to the Classic City this past weekend as Mu chapter hosted the spring parents weekend. The two-day event, tied into the Classic City Bowl, began at the house on Friday night. Catered by Taqueria Tsunami, the brothers and their parents enjoyed a great night of conversation and camaraderie before going downtown. Saturday, the parents and brothers tailgated outside of Clarke Central High School in preparation for the big game. Big thank you to Mary Beecham (mother of Colin Beecham M 2697) and Tammy Duley (mother of Kyler Duley M 2721) for their help in planning the weekend.

Fraternally,

Bennett Porson (Mu 2731)
