Mu Chapter Receives National Recognition

Unprecedented National Awards Further Highlights Mu’s Strength and Leadership

Mu Chapter (Georgia) of Sigma Nu Fraternity was recognized in July 2008 at the general Fraternity’s 63rd Grand Chapter in Austin Texas. Among 180 active chapters and over 600 attendees, Mu Chapter and its members were recognized in a number of areas:

  • The Pursuit of Excellence Award (Given to the ten chapters that had the highest scores for the Pursuit of Excellence Program – Mu had the third highest score!)
  • Increase in Manpower Award (This award is given to the chapters who have achieved an increase in manpower of 25% from one year to the next – this is Mu’s second year receiving this award.)
  • Collegiate Grand Councilman – George Ward (M 2308) (1 of 4 undergraduates selected nationally to serve on the general fraternity’s leadership council)
  • Grand Chapter Finance Committee – Austin Hackney (M 2323, current Commander)
  • Chapter Advisor of the Year – John Hearn (M 2000)
  • House Corporation Officer of the Year – Michael Barry (M 2071)

In addition, Robert Durham (M 1950) was elected Regent-Elect of the general Fraternity. Brother Durham will serve the Fraternity’s high council, and will be appointed the Fraternity’s Regent at the 2010 Grand Chapter in Boston Massachusetts!

The Grand Chapter award recognitions cap off another strong year for Mu Chapter at the University of Georgia – clearly identifying the Chapter as living up to its own, student-defined mission: To develop well-rounded, honorable leaders, who command respect by redefining the standard of excellence scholastically, socially, philanthropically, and athletically.

Mu Chapter was organized at the University of Georgia in 1873, as one of the 7 original UGA fraternities and has over 2400 initiates. Mu Chapter was the 4th Sigma Nu Chapter to be organized and is the oldest, continually operating Chapter within the Fraternity.
