Army Hero Speaks to Chapter

Mu Chapter
alumnus Bobby Woods (Mu 2300), an Army captain and Airborne Ranger, spoke to
the Active Chapter and Candidate Class on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Captain
Woods spoke of his role in Mu Chapter’s revitalization and its impact on his
career in the United States Army.

The
designation of “Ranger” is one of the most elite in the United States Army – a
title Captain Woods most certainly deserves. While on patrol in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, in August 2010, he was shot in the head by a sniper as his platoon
was ambushed by insurgents. Woods quickly bandaged his head and, rather than
seek medical attention, proceeded to help neutralize the insurgents before being
treated for his wounds. The bullet entered his head approximately two inches
above his left eye socket, fragmented, and shattered the bone behind his
forehead. Despite the seemingly-fatal wound, Woods survived over eight hours of
brain surgery and recovered more quickly than expected. In fact, Woods spent
his twenty-fifth birthday in the hospital recovering from his wounds.

During his
presentation, Woods presented the group with two challenges. First, he
encouraged them to find and serve a cause greater than themselves. Second, he
challenged them to always strive to be better men than they were the day
before. These two principles, he said, guided his fraternal and military
careers, and allowed him to serve both causes honorably.

Woods, a
2008 graduate with degrees in psychology and criminal justice from The
University of Georgia, will be returning to Athens this fall to pursue a
Masters degree in business administration from UGA’s Terry College of Business.
He will also be serving as Mu Chapter’s live-in house director.

At the
request of Sigma Nu Regent Robert Durham (Mu 1650), Woods will be leading the
Pledge of Allegiance at this summer’s Grand Chapter in Dallas, Texas.

Please join
us in saluting Captain Woods for his service to our country and for his
continued dedication to Mother Mu. He is truly a “leader with vision and
courage.”
