Robert Durham

Q) Why did you join? I came from a town of 1000 to a school of 20,000. I was looking for camaraderie and a network.

Q) What year was your pledge class? What was your PIN number?

Fall 1975. Mu 1650.

Q) What year did you graduate? 1979

Q) What was your major? BBA

Q) Tell us about your favorite memory of the fraternity?

Driving Sen. Herman Talmadge around campus so he could meet his “constituents” at the sorority houses. Also cutting the roof off our 1958 Batmobile ; Blanche’s; Coopers.

Q) What is your favorite campus memory? Did you participate in other activities on campus? I was involved with the Order of the Greek Horsemen, Gridiron, and IFC.

Favorite campus memory is closing night of Greek week 1979. Four Tops and Temptations playing alternating sets on the front porch at River Road. Front yard, road both packed.

Q) What kind of influence has the fraternity had on your life since graduation? Tremendous influence. I was involved with our House Corp for many years. I was appointed to the board of Fifth Point Properties, Sigma Nu’s real estate company in Oct 2006. In March 2007 I was appointed Vice Regent of Sigma Nu.

Every day I communicate with collegiates and Alums from all over the country.

Q) With whom do you still stay in contact? Who would you most like to find? I see Sam Tidwell, Keith Chandler and Ernie Ward more than anyone else. Joel Tidwell’s son works for me so that’s like looking at Joel every day.

We would all like to find Tommy Merritt and see more of Joe Upson.

Q) Tell us about your family: Have you married? Do you have children? My wife, Cheryl, was a Zeta at Jacksonville St. My oldest daughter, Laura, was a Theta at Bucknell. She graduated last Spring and is now a lobbyist in DC. My younger daughter, Anna Grace is in kindergarten.

The proudest I’ve been was this summer when my son, Stephen, accepted a bid from our Beta Theta  Chapter at Auburn.

Q) What other activities or organizations were you involved with during your college days? IFC all four years, officer the last two years. Gridiron.

Q) What is your nickname, if applicable, and how did you get it? “Bull”

Q) Did you live in the house? If so, who were your roommates? Tell us about a memorable time with them. I lived in the house all but the last two quarters. Sam Tidwell and I had such odd room mates in Russell Hall that we moved in to a big corner room upstairs as pledges.

I lived in the Commander’s suite for two years.

Q) What do you do for a living? Managing Director and Regional Manager for Lehman Brothers, a global investment bank.

Q) What affiliations do you currently have and/or public service do you participate in? I’m on the Administrative Board at Peachtree Road UMC, and also serve as its Treasurer.

Q) Do you have any suggestions for the Actives? For other alumni? Get involved, stay involved. As my Big Brother Kip Adams told me in 1975, the more you put into Sigma Nu, the more you’ll get out of it.

We need more alums from the old Southern Chapters to get involved on the National level.
