The community came together in full force, and the support was nothing short of phenomenal. This year’s music festival featured an incredible lineup, headlined by the renowned Eli Young Band, captivating the audience with their soulful melodies and energetic performances. Uncle Kracker, The Vegabonds, and Grace Asbury each contributed their unique musical prowess, creating a diverse and unforgettable experience for the attendees. AFTM seamlessly intertwined sets, maintaining an infectious energy throughout the night. The success of Jam for Cam extended beyond the stage, with free buses facilitating convenient transportation for attendees, connecting the Classic Center downtown with the vibrant Jam for Cam venue. The fundraising efforts reached unprecedented heights, with an astounding $268,508 raised, a testament to the community’s unwavering commitment to the cause. What’s even more remarkable is that over 3,000 supporters joined this year’s event, illustrating the enduring impact of Cameron Fearon’s legacy and the collective dedication to celebrating life through music while contributing to meaningful charities. Thank you to everyone who helped towards this year being more than a success.– Will Hearn Ole Miss TailgateIt was sad day to see our last home game of the year until 2024, but turned out for the better with a huge win the Ole Miss game. Starting off the weekend with Jam4Cam on Friday, and then on Saturday, an awesome tailgate before watching another Dawgs win under the lights. Upwards of around 1,000 people showed up and as you can imagine, the Dawgs heavily outnumbered the few Rebels that were in attendance. At least they were able to experience what a good time really is. Grandville stepped up and put on an awesome performance and Clarke’s bar never disappoints. This fall went smoothly thanks to previous social chair Dimitri Nakis and everyone that helped out. Until next year Sanford, until next year.– Troy Schmidt FranziaNovember 30th marked the last hoorah for the chapter prior to buckling down in preparation for a stressful exam season with our annual Franzia french themed date night. The house truly turned into a chalet as Christmas lights sparkled in the trees surrounding the house among Charcuterie boards, red carpets, lights strung from the indoor ceilings, glow-up Eiffel Towers illuminating dinner tables as a cellist, guitarist, and a violinist set the scene for a beautiful night in Paris. Although some folks have never been out of the country, our French date night did an incredible job setting the mood of an authentic night in Paris.– Philip Wilder Brother Spotlight Chaz Martinez: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonychazmartinez/ Luc Nadaud: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lucas-nadaud Seniors Chaz Martinez (Top) and Luc Nadaud (Bottom), were recently bestowed with the prestigious Brother Spotlight honor at chapter this month.Chaz Martinez has distinguished himself through a myriad of accomplishments and impactful involvements. Chaz’s involvement as the IFC Greek Life Liaison in the UGA Student Government Association showcases his advocacy for greater representation, fostering collaboration between Greek life and the student government. Furthermore, as previous Lieutenant Commander of Sigma Nu, he oversees the internal operations of a sizable chapter, managing a substantial budget and contributing to its prestigious recognition as an eight-time recipient of the Rock Chapter Distinction of High Honor. In each role, Chaz consistently exemplifies dedication, leadership, and a commitment to excellence.Luc has been actively involved in a guide dog program, contributing to the training of dogs until they are 1.5 years old before sending them to New York for further training. Huntley KingNovember 10, 2023UPCOMING Jam4Cam 2023We are now only nine days away from Jam4Cam, and with that being said, we are prouder than ever. With $150,000 raised so far, final details and preparations in place, and a swarm of red, black, and blue coming into Athens for Georgia vs. Ole Miss, it will be a weekend to remember! That being said, tickets are selling out quickly, and there is no guarantee for wait times and/or availability at the ticket counter on the event day, so if you are still looking to buy some tickets, read more on the history of the event,  or donate, please use the link below. I would like to give a special shoutout to the 4x4x48 team for their incredible running and donation efforts for this year’s event, the executive council of Jam4Cam for putting in a tremendous amount of work planning and fundraising, and anybody who has helped spread the message. While this event heavily focuses on the importance of the Athens community working together, it is also a great reminder of the lengths we will all go to in honor of our beloved brothers.  We can’t wait to see everyone there!!! https://givebutter.com/FZo8ah/huntleyking  September Skate NightPictured: Junior Mu Men at Fun Galaxy Roller Rink On Thursday, September 14th, Mu Brothers and their dates turned back the clock with the annual 80s RollerDisco Skate Night. Armed with the cheapest wigs Amazon sells, jean jackets, disco pants, headbands, and about 40 Marty McFly impersonators, everyone descended upon the Fun Galaxy Skating Rink for a fun night. As has now become a recurring tradition, those who have not lost the timeless art of rollerskating quickly strapped up and hit the floor at full speed, whereas the rest of us took a minute to mentally prepare for the bruises to come. As one may expect, it did not take long to see Brothers and their dates begin slamming, sliding, tripping, flipping, whamming, and crashing in a montage-like fashion with the soundtracks of Def Leopard, David Bowie, Springsteen, Duran Duran, and many others echoing around to cover up the choice words from the fallen. In case anyone was wondering by the summary of the night, yes, I am part of the group of non-gifted skaters who woke up the next morning covered in tender purple bruises. Nonetheless, it was a night to remember, and the post-skating recap conversations we had in the morning were nothing short of hysterical. However, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the undisputed highlight of the night, which was when Rush Chairman Charlie Woocher (Mu 2901) lowered a shoulder on an incoming Head Rush Chairman Nic Sapp (Mu 2875) and laid him out flat on the cold wood floor. Whether the collision was an intentional way for Charlie to settle a score with Nic or an “accident” has been widely debated; however, when asking Nic about the incident, he told me, “I may forgive for now, but I will not forget.” Looks like skating next year is going to be a blast!! Michael Barry and Judge Kevin MorrisPictured: Vice Regent Michael Barry (Right) and the Honorable Judge Kevin Morris (Left) With New Members On September 13th, Mu Brothers Judge Kevin Morris and Vice Regent Michael Barry returned to Athens to speak with members of Mu Chapter. In addition to leading a L.E.A.D. session focusing on Mu History, National Fraternity Operations, and Career Development, they were gracious enough to share stories of their college and professional careers. Within their session filled with laughter and lessons, a deeper meaning shone through to many of us that in this rollercoaster of life, it is crucial to be driven and focused while also knowing how to mix in good times with friends, family, and hopefully thunderous laughter along the way. Among other lessons we were left with included that it is okay not always to have a plan, personal and professional relationships are not to be taken for granted, and that no matter how tempting a thank you text may be to save time, the dying art of a thank you note will go further than our screen-obsessed generation may believe.  October InitiationPictured: The 2023 Initiate Class On Sunday, October 1st, Mu Chapter welcomed 40 initiates, 10 of whom are legacies. We are proud of this group of young men we have brought together from all over the country, including California, South Carolina, Colorado, North Carolina, Arizona, and Massachusetts. This class is very capable and well into developing as a great group of young men that will continue to make Mu Chapter great. Among enjoying the fruits of the freshman experience Athens has to offer, these young men have jumped into activity in the chapter by competing for positions on committees, taking careful note of the chapter’s operations, and getting a jumpstart on academic excellence on campus. While many of us are envious of the abundant time ahead in Athens, initiation always serves as a great reminder of the wonderful process of developing as a member of the school, fraternity, and society alongside dozens of best friends during one’s time at UGA. Congratulations to these young men, and I believe I speak for all older members of Mu Chapter when I urge them not to skip class, even 8:00 a.m., try to get some sleep every once in a while, and not do anything that would embarrass their mothers. Parent’s WeekendPledge Classes of 88′ and 89′ Pictured From Left:Tim Quinn, Noel Williams, Scott Veal, David Sellars, Charles Tumlin, Eric Ferrara, Patrick Pierce, Hodges Bradberry, and Frank Jackson Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of October served as parent’s weekend for Mu Chapter this year. Among traveling hibachi food trucks for the juniors, a private event at Paloma Park, and a fantastic tailgate with a top-shelf bar that Mu brothers aren’t used to, it is safe to say the weekend was a success. When asking Social Chair Dimitri Nakis what the key to this fall’s success was, he said, “It truly is a miracle what can be done when you rally a team of great moms to help plan the event paired with the motivation of getting cut off from grocery money if I don’t make sure everything is perfect.” In all seriousness, thank you, parents, for treating us to a great weekend of family, nice meals, a Dawgs win, and helping teach us how to hang clean shirts instead of leaving them in the basket. With a regrown connection to legacy in recent years, this weekend also turned out to be a great alumni gathering, as many now fathers of the chapter were able to reconnect with friends in the beautiful town that holds so many memories and will hopefully continue producing more for Mu Men for centuries to come!! Photo Credit to Dr. Eric Ferrara  Big Brother NightPictured Mu Family From Left: Jack Mcward, Payton McKemie, Sam Shelton, and William Cowart On Monday, October 9th, we hosted one of the most highly anticipated nights of the year, Mu Chapter’s annual Big Brother night. While some literal younger brothers were added to their siblings’ families within the chapter, the rest of the freshman class embraced their families and their sophomore bigs. Beyond this night is associated with many great memories ranging from family traditions and big brother impersonations; this night is a fun way to urge the new initiates to be comfortable reaching out to and relying on older guys. While the festivities can sometimes become hectic, as naturally happens when 160 college men are gathered together in the house, freshmen learn that senior members of the chapter are mentors, motivators, and caregivers for when things go awry. Highlights of the night include being together on the back porch as a whole fraternity, impromptu wrestling matches, a well-timed Austin Riley home run mid event giving us a little happiness in an otherwise bleak Braves performance, and Sophomore Luke Tredennick introducing a red snapper into his family. OktoberfestPictured: Senior Mu Men and Their dates During UGA Football’s bye-week, Mu Chapter planned its annual invasion of Helen, Georgia, for Oktoberfest. Among lederhosen as far as the eye can see, brothers enjoyed German beer, bratwurst, minigolf, and mountain coasters before gathering in the beer hall for dancing under the serenade of a live performance of Bavarian music. This annual tradition has won the hearts of almost every brother, as it allows for a change of scenery, culture, and routine for a day in the quest to continue the event’s reputation among sororities as the best date night of the year. When I asked Junior John Bowling his thoughts on the event, he told me that “there is no way to beat the day. I mean, how can you beat having 160 of your friends and their dates all dressed up, dancing, and hollering around the town while everyone else is sitting on their couches in Athens, trying to figure out how to spend the week off of Georgia Football?” Adding to John’s point, the real key to success is the combination of having a day that allows for maximal chapter attendance, fantastic execution on the part of the Executive Council, and excitement that brothers build throughout the weeks leading up to ensure that the day always exceeds expectations.  [...]
Tyler EgeNovember 10, 2023Good afternoon Alumni, The active chapter has had a fantastic fall semester and we are so excited to share what we have done in the last few months. Founded in honor of our late brother Cameron Fearon, Jam For Cam set out to host a festival-style event in remembrance of Cameron and to bring awareness to melanoma research for the second straight year. This year Jam For Cam hosted seven  bands for eight and a half hours of non-stop music. We moved locations to Southern Brewing Company and created a strategic partnership with them that was critical to our success. We are proud to announce that Jam For Cam 2019 was attended by 10,000 people and raised just over $120,000! This makes Jam For Cam UGA’s largest private greek fundraiser and puts us just under $200,000 raised in our first fiscal year. We thank all Mu alumni who supported us along the way. If you want to read more about the event check out this story from the Red and Black: https://www.redandblack.com/culture/jam-for-cam-raises-for-skin-cancer-charities-with-local/article_2036de56-ed3c-11e9-8ac2-973d6defe907.htmlThank you to the many alumni who joined the active chapter for the 2019 alumni tailgate. Food was catered by Saucehouse Barbecue and alumni and active brothers enjoyed connecting over shared brotherly bonds. After the event, the active brothers spoke above the many connections made throughout the day and were incredibly grateful to the alumni who took the time to join us in rooting on the Dawgs. Along with catered food, attendees enjoyed an incredible band from Nashville, TN. Big thanks to Jen Lawson (mother of Sophomore Ethan Lawson) for her hard work in planning this year’s fall Parents Weekend, we look forward to welcoming Sigma Nu parents back to Athens in April. The brothers made the annual migration down to St. Simons, GA for the matchup between Florida and Georgia. The alumni tailgate will consist of food catered by Saucehouse, music and a brief program for active members and alumni. Please stay tuned for more details as we wait for an announcement on the time of kickoff! We are thrilled to announce the initiation of the fall 2019 pledge class into brotherhood! Last Sunday, the 45 member class was successfully initiated as brothers in front of the active chapter and attending alumni. The class comes from all over the state as well as the country such as Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana,  Tennessee, and California. Thank you to all alumni who attended last week’s event as we are honored to partake in our time-honored ritual together. Congratulations to Marshal Charlie Ogletree (MU 2669) for running a fantastic candidate program! This September, the active chapter and the newly initiated candidate class were honored to welcome four distinguished alumni back to the Chateau. Michael Barry (MU 2071), Ben Woodworth (MU 1032), Regent John Hearn (MU 2000), and Luther Lockwood (MU 1901) all took the time to speak to the brothers about a variety of different subjects. Mr. Barry spent time educating the candidates on the power of standing up to hazing while having them partake various situational activities. Mr. Lockwood spoke on the history of Mu chapter while telling the story of James Bonham and founding of Mu chapter. Regent Hearn also helped educate the new class on the history of Sigma Nu while adding both college and life advice. Finally, Mr. Woodworth, who spoke on his stories in the Navy while teaching the values of proper leadership. We can’t thank our incredible alumni enough for their continued commitment to the active chapter. Mu chapter made the most of the Dawgs bye weekend by traveling to Helen Georgia to celebrate Oktoberfest. Brothers and their dates dressed their best in authentic German lederhosen and began exploring the town. The group quickly found food at the many Helen pubs and restaurants available. The evening then lead to a Helen beer hall, The Helen Oktoberfest, where brothers and their dates were greeted by multiple German bands and beer. As the event came to a close; it was evident that the brothers had a great time with the idea of starting this tradition well into the future. Jam For Cam is just one week away and the brothers are hard at working trying to recreate the success of last year’s event. If you missed last year, Jam For Cam is a non-profit organization founded in honor of our late brother, Cameron Fearon who passed away from metastatic melanoma in August of 2018. Jam For Cam’s three pronged mission of community, awareness and music is culminated in a concert-style event hosted in the fall of every year. This year, Jam For Cam will take place at Southern Brewing Company in Athens, GA and will feature 7 bands will an expected attendance over 5,000 people. The brothers couldn’t be more excited to raise money and awareness for The Melanoma Research Foundation and are counting down the seconds until the event. We invite all alumni who find their way to Athens next weekend to come join us at 5pm on Friday October 11th. Accompanying them was Andy Kingery, a dear friend of theirs and a soon to be member of Sigma Nu. Mr. Kingery is set to be initiated with the fall of 2019 pledge class as a non-matriculate member. We spent our time getting to know Mr. Kingery as he informed the chapter of his life story and his desire to complete the process he started back in the late 1950s. We are honored to get to meet Mr. Kingery and are humbled to welcome him to Sigma Nu on September 29th.  In keeping with tradition, the active chapter brought back “Alamo Scout” by hosting our fall party at the house. Thanks to social chair Sam Parker (MU 2711), the party was a huge success boasting hundreds of students and three bands. The brothers and guests enjoyed music from Groove Fetish, Great Peacock and Flash and Trash.  Mu brothers did some incredible things this summer from internship to studying abroad check out their stories below:  John Evan Laughter (MU 2714) spent his summer interning on Capitol Hill in the Office of U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson. During his time in DC, John Evan worked with the legislative team on finance and tax law, and was immensely grateful for the opportunity to learn about the policy making process. Brothers Fred Sager (MU 2703), Logan Chalfie (MU 2722), Jimmy McCarthy (MU 2695) and Taylor Last (MU 2727) spent their summer studying abroad in Innsbruck, Austria. While taking three classes through the University of New Orleans affiliated university, the brothers spent their time balancing work and travel. Logan and Fred even found their way to visit “Tomorrowland”, the largest live music festival in the world.  Brothers Jeff Powell (MU 2759), Shelby Edwards (MU 2742), Hank Flood (MU 2744), Michael McCarthy (MU 2755) and Jack Leoni (MU 2751) spent part of their summer backpacking through Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. The brothers spent their nights in tents while taking in the sights of the west. Check out these cool pictures below!  Brother Alex Landry (MU 2673)  spent his summer working for Tom Greene  (MU 1964) at Alliant. Alex worked in property and casualty insurance brokerage by shadowing brokers throughout the summer.  [...]
Huntley KingSeptember 13, 2023Grüße From InnsbruckPictured: Mu Men Outside of Belvedere Palace in ViennaAs a part of the 48th annual Summer Study Abroad in Innsbruck, Austria, hosted by The University of New Orleans, 13 Mu brothers studied in Europe during the six-week program. The brothers lived in student dorms with new friends from Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, New Orleans, and even some fellow Sigma Nu’s from LSU. Over the course of the summer, the brothers attempted to surf the famous Munich River, saw the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Vienna, took boat tours of Prague, Budapest, and Amsterdam, and enjoyed wine tours in Italy. Among many valuable life lessons learned between cuisine, culture, and international travel, some of the most important lessons learned by the Mu men include: you can indeed bring a sword through TSA, we are lucky not to have to pay for water every meal at home, and hiking steep mountains in flip flops is actually not a good idea. 8th Consecutive Rock Chapter AwardPictured: JD (Mu 2863) Alongside Regent Maury Gaston (Mu 2952)During June, Commander JD St Pé and Treasurer John D. Hawkins traveled to Fort Lauderdale to attend Sigma Nu’s Grand Chapter. As part of the ceremonies, Mu Chapter received its 8th consecutive Rock Chapter Award thanks to a continued lineage of historic participation and excellence from the Mu brothers both currently in Athens and those who have graduated but stay connected. Although as a chapter, the bar has been to continue being named a Rock Chapter consecutively, this should not take away from the incredible work it takes to continue Mu’s excellence. The chapter as a whole does a fantastic job with service, academics, and campus involvement, but I would like to make sure that Lieutenant Commander Chaz Martinez receives special recognition for his incredible work in making this year’s Pursuit of Excellence Program (PEP) that is used to gauge a chapter’s worthiness of the Rock Chapter honor. Additionally, Lieutenant Commander Emilio Ferrara did incredible work as well, as the Rock Chapter is bi-annual, so Emilio worked on the PEP starting during his term. Capitol HillPictured From Left: Jay Wright (Mu 2841) and Former Commander Walker Clark (Mu 2819)During the summer, Mu Chapter had several members working on Capitol Hill in numerous positions ranging from working with congressmen to working with retired high-ranking former Pentagon advisors. Senior Jay Wright interned with David Kustoff of Tennessee’s 8th district as well as Tim Burchett of the 2nd district. In these roles, he attended committee meetings of the Committee for Ways and Means, the Judiciary Committee, the House Oversight Committee, presidential candidate hearings, and a personal highlight of SEC receptions where Jay met Nick Saban and John Calipari. Additionally, Senior and former Commander Walker Clark and Senior Russell Cox worked as congressional interns. Senior Griffin Boykin opted to serve in a different role. Griffin spent his summer in D.C. as a global military sales and strategy analyst for Textron Systems. Essentially, he worked on M&A with aerospace and defense industry companies; using his finance background, he was able to support directors of land, air, and sea systems in business development. Rush TeamPictured: “Big Hoss Race” Between Head Rush Chair Kyler Roy and Accept Mason BrunerDuring the summer, the rush team headed by Nic Sapp and Kyler Roy enjoyed a successful rush process. The team was able to assemble an impressive 41 accepts before the end of summer including 10 legacies and candidates from eight different states. In a conversation with Rush Chairman Alex Roberts told me “I just really enjoyed hanging out with my brothers in Athens this summer while having the opportunity to mould a new group of future best friends.” Rush highlights include rafting, band parties, “The Big Hoss Showdown” pictured above between Head Rush Chair Kyler Roy and accept Mason Bruner, and the continued timeless tradition of late-night hangouts on the famous River Road back porch. With rush officially concluding last night, congratulations are in order to Nic, Kyler, and the entire rush team for their fantastic efforts in building what will hopefully turn into the best Sigma Nu pledge class yet! Camp LeadershipPictured From Left: Jack Bahr (Mu 2897) with Carson Rutledge (Mu 2938)Over the course of the summer, Brothers Jack Bahr and Carson Rutledge served in leadership and counselor positions at Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton. Brother Bahr led the advanced leadership academy overseeing 50 Leaders in Training (LITs) every three weeks over the 10-week summer that took part in a leadership experience that would transform them from campers into future staff. Jack set up the logistical side of the LIT program, evaluated all 150 candidates, and prepared daily leadership classes. Both Carson and Jack shared highlights of getting to enjoy Lake Burton and the mountains, the Fourth of July fireworks they get to set off, and seeing the growth of campers over the course of their camp sessions. Summer Spotlight: Philip Wilder’s ServicePictured: Phillip Wilder (Mu 2896)Phillip served over 2,000 children and parents at JH Ranch in Northern California. JH Ranch is a Christian camp that focuses on using its undistracted environment to bring healing to families and the youth. While there, Phillip spent four weeks as a “coach” to roughly 30 different high schoolers, mentoring them through different trials and tribulations in life. He also safely guided over 40 groups of 6+ down class III and IV white water rapids. When asked about his favorite memory, Phillip can’t think of anything else other than being able to put the chaos of the world aside and experience God and His creation. Spotlight: Emilio Ferrara on High CouncilPictured Third From Left: Brother Ferrara (Mu 2815) Sporting a Bowtie at Grand ChapterAmong his awards on behalf of his academic excellence at the university, Brother Emilio Ferrara was selected to serve on the Sigma Nu National High Council as a student representative. When speaking with Brother Ferrara, he told me that ” serving on the High Council, I am able to bring the perspective of collegiate members to the national fraternity. I have participated in strategic planning exercises to form Sigma Nu Fraternity’s strategic imperatives and goals. The high council has also enabled me to witness a well-functioning board of directors and learn about the policy governance model.” Congratulations to Emilio for this fantastic achievement, and this opportunity to represent Mu Chapter to the national community! Huntley KingJune 22, 2023Classic City Bowl (Pictured: Graham Collins Mu 2838 on the tackle) On Sunday, April 16th, the brothers of Mu chapter took on Sigma Chi in the annual Classic City Bowl. With questionable no-calls in the final minutes before a 14-7 loss, emotions ran high for the brothers representing Mu Chapter. However, the event was a huge success, with over $10,000 being raised between the chapters for Jam4Cam and The Samuel L. Asbury Foundation. Highlights include the introduction of a sorority “DR Pepper Halftime Toss” competition, watching UGA Linebacker Graham Collins level several Sigma Chi’s, and colorful commentating by senior Harry Kahn. After a party bus around Athens to shake off the nerves, JD returned to the house with the entire Sigma Nu and Phi Mu chapters awaiting in the basement. Recorder Charles Peeler conducted a heartwarming ceremony, or so I think because he may or may not have forgotten to speak into the microphone to be heard above all the cheering. With the annual theme being “tacky wedding,” it is always a pleasure to see who can throw together the best outfit. Although not pictured, it would be wrong of me not to give honorable mentions to Nick Tuggle, 24′, for his banana costume as well as Conner Kuck, 24′, and Aidan Reesing, 24′, for their Thing 1 and Thing 2 spoof. In case you missed it, my favorite is John Hawkins, 25′ in the above picture’s background, dressed as an estranged family member you would not want to attend your wedding. Beach Weekend (Pictured: Members of the Sophomore pledge class in Myrtle) With the recent return of White Star Beach Weekend, brothers and dates made their way to Myrtle Beach on April 28th for a weekend of relaxation before finals. Between putt putt competitions, beach sports, and wandering around, it is safe to say the trip was a success. Among many memories that will not soon be forgotten, a definite highlight was John Hawkins, 25’ digging himself into a 6-foot-deep hole in the sand. With the recent push to return this weekend to its previous glory, we have been lucky to have fantastic underclassmen participation as the culture is growing back for this to be one of the premiere weekends of the year.  Late Night Date Night As the year ends with thoughts of internships, graduation trips, and finals approaching, Late Night Date Night on April 14th was the “last stand” for the chapter’s social plans on River Road. Brothers and their dates began the date night early in downtown Athens for dinners and a private event before returning home to “late night” in the basement with live music and several hundred Domino’s pizzas. Among seeing dozens of brothers mixed in pajamas or tuxedos for those who had been on Kappa Delta formal, there was no shortage of moments that left myself and others grasping for air between laughs. I would like to take the time to applaud the social committee for their incredible efforts throughout this year in planning and executing the best date nights among all fraternities. CURO Presentations (Pictured: Ethan Leoni Mu 2822 during his CURO presentation) At the beginning of the month, Ethan Leoni, 24’ and Emilio Ferrara, 24’ participated in a UGA CURO symposium for research undergrads at the university. Ethan presented his work from Dr. Schmidt’s lab within the Department of Biochemistries and Molecular Biology post-translational protein modifications by constructing DNA sequences with various nucleotides. Additionally, Emilio presented his work from Dr. Tern’s lab within the Department of Biochemistries and Molecular Biology with the CRISPR/Cas9 system and its bacterial hosts as a way for bacteria to fight off viral infection. Both were awarded scholarships for their research and continue to push themselves and the chapter to raise the bar both in and out of the classroom. Brother Spotlight: John Bowling (Pictured: John, right, with pledge brother Joseph Waters in Athens after the 2023 National Championship) John Selb Bowling IV Mu 2866 is a member of the Sophomore pledge class. Originally from Alpharetta, Georgia, John graduated from Kings Ridge Christian School before attending the University of Georgia. Nicknamed the Minister of Mayhem, the Controller of Chaos, and several others that are best not repeated, John has used his witty humor and laid-back personality to become a beloved chapter member. John is studying real estate at the Terry College of Business and hopes to begin a development and/or investment career following graduation. Among being an avid golfer and never missing a UGA baseball game, John often grills out at the house with his pledge brothers during his free time. Huntley KingApril 24, 2023Woodstock Pictured: Boy Named Banjo during their set On Saturday, March 18, Woodstock made its continued annual return to River Road. After countless hours of planning, setting up, and searching for bands, Woodstock was able to be executed smoothly, thanks to the incredible work of the social committee under the leadership of Social Chairman Dimitri Nakis. Festivities kicked off at 4:00, as Underground Springhouse took the stage prior to performances by a reunited AFTM playing their first show back together and Boy Named Banjo. The night was capped off by NOTD when the crowd was illuminated with glow-in-the-dark foam sticks as the day of peace came to a close. As those living in the house awoke Sunday morning, it is safe to say the landscape was eerily similar to the aftermath of the infamous final 1999 Woodstock, as it seemed as though there was not enough manpower in the world to clean up. However, in what can only be described as a Woodstock miracle, pledge classes rallied together to restore the Chalet back to its glory. L.E.A.D. Kickoff Pictured: Brother Woods and McDonald with members of the chapter On Monday, March 20th, the chapter was delighted to welcome Mu men Adam McDonald and Bobby Woods back to kick off our efforts for L.E.A.D., a program aimed at teaching important values and life lessons to members of the chapter via speakers and workshops. Brothers McDonald and Woods were both members of the return of Mu Chapter at UGA before joining the Navy and Army. Brother McDonald has spent his tenure as a member of the Navy, having served as a communication expert on a counter-narcotics SEAL team as well as having flown P-8As, which are most famously known for their use in surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. Meanwhile, Brother Woods served in the 101st Airborne Division as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan when an enemy sniper shot him in the head. Before receiving medical treatment, he ensured the safety of his fellow servicemen during the combat, and only later, once his men were safe, did he focus on his own wounds. With Brother McDonald now serving as one of the Navy’s premiere recruiters and Brother Woods working in venture capital on top of running his own farm outside of Athens, it is safe to say that we were extremely lucky to have them speak on their service experiences, global politics, job recruiting advice, and several college stories that had the entire room laughing.  Brotherhood March Madness Prior to UConn claiming the NCAA basketball title, the real March Madness champions were crowned on none other than the courts of River Road. Newly appointed Brotherhood Chairman Kyler Roy organized a 3v3 tournament for members of Mu Chapter to participate in as a way to strengthen relationships, stay active, and facilitate friendly competition within the chapter. As tensions grew throughout the week, the afternoon of Sunday the 26th finally arrived. As brothers awaited for the tournament to commence, the buildup took a screeching halt as miscommunication left a few participants who will go unnamed to arrive half an hour late for the tournament’s first game. However, Brother Roy quickly got the tournament back on track before a successful afternoon of airballs, questionable foul calls, realizations of not being in the same shape as high school, and an eventual champion being crowned. I would like to congratulate “Team Duffy” for winning the tournament, as Graham Connell, Jack Bynum, and Ben “Duffy” Burnett took home the imaginary trophy. Brother Spotlight: Jack Bynum Pictured from right to left: Jack Bynum, Nic Sapp, and Addison Long Joe Hearn Bynum IV MU 2888, otherwise known to many as just “Bynum,” is a member of the Sophomore pledge class. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Jack attended North Atlanta High School, where he participated as a member of the school’s lacrosse team throughout his time in high school. Once admitted into UGA, Jack wasted little time hitting the books, as his original pre-med track ensured he never had a shortage of 300-page textbooks on hand. Following his Freshman year, Jack pivoted to his current pre-law route and intends to pursue a law degree. Between juggling one of the highest GPAs in his pledge class and regular shifts working at The Silver Dollar Bar, Jack has managed to consistently find time to go out with his pledge brothers and enjoy the famous Athens music scene via many visits to the Georgia Theater. While his ability to have a good time has never once been questioned, Jack is also known throughout the fraternity for being a compassionate brother who will always set aside time to help anyone in need of a variety of tasks between little favors all the way through emotional support during trying personal times.
